June in a polytunnel

What to plant in June?

June in the foil tunnel is generally a time of harvest after several months of effort. Although there is still much to do under cover, each day brings us closer to the first taste of vegetables and fruits from the greenhouse. Despite the excitement , it’s worth caring for plants, monitoring the heat inside by ventilating the greenhouse , while planting new varieties.

This time in the Krosagro guide, we will tell you what gardeners can expect in the greenhouse in June.

What to plant in June?

In June, you can sow plants that will be harvested in autumn. When deciding on a given species, take into account the time remaining until the end of the season . Carefully read the packaging of seeds. If there is mention of them in June, it is worth planting new ones after removing the old plants. However, it might be too late for vegetables and fruits with a long growing season. They will not manage to develop in time, and have trouble coping with winter conditions. If the sites that were dug and fed earlier in the year are available again, lettuce, cress, cucumber, okra, fennel, garden dill, squash, green bean, endive and beetroot can be considered.

Plant and foil tunnel care in June

As plants are thriving in summer, it is worth checking if some of them have not grown too much. Try to avoid situations where crops develop in close quarters and feel constricted. In that case, some plants can asphyxiate others. The temperature in June can be high, remember to ventilate the greenhouse so that it does not overheat. At night, you may leave the vents closed on both sides of the tent to retain the accumulated heat for as long as possible. This will significantly improve plant growth. In order to check that it is not too hot, a thermometer will definitely be needed. Take preferably one for air condition, another one for soil. It could be necessary to water the plants several times a day. To reduce soil evaporation and reduce the cost of irrigation, it is worth spreading agrotextile.

Most flowers should already be pollinated. But if some of them still do not show the transition to fruiting, using special agents or pollinators might be required. In order to pollinate plants in a polytunnel, bumblebees are often chosen. They perform much better under cover than bees.

The greenhouse, being a warm and humid place, is an ideal site for pests. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically monitor the crop, to notice any changes and uninvited guests. In the presence of pests , you should react immediately . Identify them first and then eliminate them using special means or methods.

Herbs in a polytunnel

A lot of plants from this group have a short growing season, so a small site can be used for their culture. Everyone experienced the difference between dried spices and fresh ones. Moreover, quite a few of them, in addition to their tasting values, have different application. Some have a positive effect on the health of neighboring plants, others repel pests, a large group supports the development of the main crop. They can also be used in cosmetics, preparations and as a natural aromatic enhancer at home.

Preparation for winter crops

Although winter seems far away, you can start planning for winter plants. Thanks to this, you will be able to enjoy fresh produce even during cold and snowy months. Plants providing the body with the necessary vitamins and micro elements will be the preferred options. If you have not prepared seedlings in the polytunnel, look for them in garden centers. When planting seedlings, you are fairly guaranteed that they will fully develop and will not get damaged during cold months. The ideal choice will be varieties of lettuce, which are known for their resistance to low temperatures. The record-breakers are kale and spinach, for which growth processes take place even when winter is well established.

Development of crops under cover

June is also the month where you can notice a lack of space in the polytunnel. If you feel you can cope with a bigger yield, you can enlarge the foil tunnel. The finished Krosagro structures are modular constructions. The frame made of steel pipes and profiles can be enlarged at any time by just ordering elements and accessories from the manufacturer, offering an extension of several square meters.
