Care of tomatoes in a greenhouse is not the easiest task. This plant has specific needs and each problem influences subsequent harvests. One of the most important factors for growth is the correct distribution of plants. Limited space between them leads to poor results. Density of plants, method of cultivation and tomato growth will also depend on the chosen variety.

Tomatoes in a greenhouse
Tomatoes planted too densely can lead to limited airflow between them. This translates into a greater risk of illness. Plants are also competing. They tend to grow upwards. The result of such a process is a small number of leaves, flowers and fruits. It should also be remembered that the reverse also has a negative effect. Too much space between plants causes a loss of cultivation area. In addition, weeds can thrive in these vacant places and compete with plants for minerals, water and the sun. They should be removed systematically. It’s a regular activity that can be simplified. To reduce the appearance of unwanted plants, lay agro-textile on the cultivated site, leaving holes for the plants.
Varieties of tomatoes for garden polytunnel
Virtually all varieties of tomatoes can be grown in a polytunnel. When choosing a particular variety, let your preferences guide you. Taste and size of fruits, size of plants, ripening time, etc. Beginners regarding greenhouse cultivation should rather choose standard tomato varieties. As they gain experience over time, they can then opt for more demanding varieties. For a first experience, choose varieties such as: Akron, Bekas, Hardy, Tsarin, Brooklyn, Boderine, Ivet or Minatert. Cocktail tomatoes are the most resistant and easy to grow.
Tomato pruning
Once tomatoes are placed in the soil, put a stake right beside them. Plants will need such a support. According to their development, it will be necessary to cut them. Such an operation can create spaces, introduce adequate ventilation, easier access to each part of the plant, facilitating care. Reducing green mass boosts the appearance of flowers. Some determinate varieties do not need to be pruned. They reach a certain height, as well as a number of flowers, and then stop growing. Tomatoes can be grown with 1, 2 or 3 shoots. For each method, different cuts are made. When leaving 2 and 3 shoots, maturation takes longer but harvests are more abundant.
Ventilation of crops under cover
Tomatoes need a lot of sun and heat to grow properly. Good crop ventilation is also important. To create the appropriate microclimate inside the greenhouse, side vents are fitted. These are located on both sides of a multi-vegetation tunnel. The openings are lifted using a crank. When they are raised, they allow air through the greenhouse, eliminating moisture and excess heat. Behind the foil, an insect net is supplied. It is designed to prevent access of pests that could do damage inside. Gardeners can therefore create the right conditions for tomato cultivation, ensuring a good harvest.
