Gardening with children
With better weather conditions, it is easier to enjoy outdoor activities and involve children in gardening projects. It is an enriching environment that allows them to learn and develop a wide range of skills and knowledge. At home, a vegetable garden provides many discussions, meal preparations and a healthy and beneficial occupation, after school, rather than television.
How to involve children in the garden
Develop short garden tasks, to be carried out over a period of several days to develop an interest and understand the changes. Propose rather than impose. Examples of activities: Collection, drying and sowing of seeds, perfect to assimilate the growth cycle, the seasons and the availability of the products labeling and plant care: beneficial for reading and writing. Taking care of young crop helps to incorporate the notions of time and effort before the reward. Weed control, recognition of species by color and size, harvest composting and importance of recycling identification of insects: children love to collect, observe and manipulate insects, snails, frogs, worms. They will quickly understand that some are useful in the garden and others not.
Do not worry about mud, water. Wear boots and appropriate clothing to get dirty without hearing about it! Children like to experiment and touch the mud, water, sun, wind and all the external elements. They can also integrate their toys, bicycles. Give them a little freedom and continue on your side! Do not forget sunscreen and a hat in the summer. Let them also create their own games and activities.
Transfer garden activities to the kitchen
Children have to make the transition from growing crops, harvesting, preparing dinner, cooking and, of course, consuming the fruits or vegetables they have planted as seeds a few months ago. This can lead to another passion for cooking.
